Rock Road Plumbing, Inc. prides itself on promoting green building techniques.  Green building refers to making new construction and remodeling choices that are environmentally friendly.

Water Savers are Money Savers

* Repair plumbing leaks. One simple way to be “green” is to repair plumbing leaks.  According to the American Water Works Association (www.awwa.org), in the average home, plumbing leaks account for 14% of the total water consumed.  Leaky toilets can waste up to 500 gallons a day!   Repairing these leaks not only saves the earth’s resources, but also saves you money.

* Install low flow toilets. Installing low flow plumbing fixtures can mean big water savings. Low flow toilets decrease the amount of gallons used  per person per day by one half (they use 1.6 gallons per flush compared to the old 3.5 gallons per flush units) and dual flush toilets can decrease the toilet water usage by two-thirds. Dual flush toilets have one lever for liquid waste (a half flush of .8 gallons) and one lever for solid waste (a full 1.6 gallon flush).

* Install low flow faucets. Low flow faucets are another easy way to cut water usage.  According to the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing, PATH (www.pathnet.org), faucets with low-flow aerators can cut water usage by 40% and save a typical family more than 1,700 gallons of water per year. Water can further be saved by simply using less water; this can be achieved by the installation of electronic faucets.  These have dual benefits, water conservation and reduction in germ transference by eliminating the need to touch the handle to operate the faucet.

* Install a tankless water heater. Heating water accounts for 14% of the average U.S. household energy budget , according to PATH. Tankless water heaters, also known as on demand water heaters or instantaneous water heaters, can save 10% to 20% of a home’s energy bill, PATH says.  These systems provide hot water on an on demand basis and are therefore able to eliminate the water standby losses caused with traditional water heating units.  Another option that can conserve water is installing a hot water circulation system.  This system provides hot water quickly which significantly reduces water lost as there is only a short wait for hot water.

The best way to appreciate the benefits of making green building choices is to think about the long term return.  We encourage our customers to consider choices such as those previously explained.  We are committed to doing our part in conserving our earth’s resources and have dual flush toilets, low flow faucet aerators and a tankless water heater in our own home.   Remember we are all responsible conserving our natural resources, including water.
